The LIØNSBERG Playbook

The Living Guide of The Great Game. The field book for the operational movements the Body actually performs.

The Playbook is where the Pattern becomes Practice. It is the field music-book of LIØNSBERG — the gathered set of common-need compositions a Circle, Community, Bioregion, or any Body opens when they need to perform a specific operational riff.

Where This Volume Sits — Lexicon · Pattern Language · Playbook

The three operational Volumes of the Codex each carry a distinct content role. The same concept may appear in all three — held differently in each.

  • Lexicon defines WHAT — the canonical definition of every term in the LIØNSBERG vocabulary. One entry per term. Etymology, function, distinction from distorted uses, linkages.
  • Pattern Language articulates HOW — the operational wisdom of establishing and maintaining the concept in lived practice. Context · Forces · Solution · Scale · Examples · Related Patterns. The grammar of action.
  • Playbook composes WHEN — the riffs that invoke Patterns in sequence for common operational needs. Context · Sequence · Improvisation · Outcome. The field music-book; the choreography.

Example: Selectively Permeable Membrane — the Lexicon defines what a Selectively Permeable Membrane is; the Pattern Language articulates how it is established and maintained; this Playbook composes the Plays that invoke it (Play — Establish Selectively Permeable Membranes, Play — Forge Your Field Of Agreements, Play — Connect With Another Circle) when the operational moment calls for it.

The three Volumes are interexistent. Each holds its facing canonically; the others reference. The cross-linking is rich; the wisdom is held once.

Plays Are Riffs; Patterns Are The Notes

Plays are compositions of Patterns. Each Play in this Playbook is a brief score for a recurring operational need: how to run a meeting, how to make a proposal, how to make a decision, how to convene a Circle, how to onboard a new member, how to release a member gracefully, how to choose a Quest, how to pass the Flame.

A Play does not duplicate the wisdom of its underlying Patterns — that wisdom lives canonically in The LIØNSBERG Pattern Language. A Play invokes Patterns in sequence or weave, with brief choreographic notes about transitions, timing, and improvisation. The Play is the riff. The Patterns are the notes. The Pattern Language is the source of the music.

When a Body opens a Play, the Play sends them to the canonical Patterns for the deeper wisdom of HOW to perform each move. The Play orchestrates; the Pattern Cards deliver.

Every Pattern lives in one canonical place; every Play arranges them.

The Architecture

Pattern Language (Vol V Part) — Architecturally Primary
Patterns live at: LIØNSBERG Wiki Books/The LIØNSBERG Pattern Language/Patterns/
   Each Pattern Card: name-based filename — Form A Circle.md, Spirit Precedes Pattern.md
Wisdom articulated ONCE per Pattern Card

Playbook (Vol IV) — The Field Music-Book
Plays live at: LIØNSBERG Wiki Books/The LIØNSBERG Playbook/Plays/
   Each Play: "Play — Title.md" filename — Play — Create Or Join A Circle.md, Play — Run A Meeting.md
Play composes Patterns for a specific operational need

A Play's form:

  • Name — the operational moment (Run a Meeting, Form a Circle, Pass the Flame, Make a Decision)
  • Context — when this riff fires; what situation calls for it
  • The Sequence — Patterns invoked in order or weave, with brief timing/transition notes
  • Improvisation Notes — common variations; when to adapt
  • Outcome — what the riff aims for
  • Related Plays — adjacent compositions

The actual wisdom of HOW to perform each Pattern lives in the Pattern Card. The Play is the choreography.

Your First Moves

The earliest Plays in a Sovereign's walk:

  1. Play — Cross The Threshold — Step beyond the boundary of the Old World into the New.
  2. Anchor The First Practice — Root yourself in the daily rhythm. (See Pattern: The Daily Way.)
  3. Play — Create Or Join A Circle — Gather 3 to 13 sovereign souls. (See Play: Play — Create Or Join A Circle; invokes Pattern: Form A Circle.)
  4. Play — Choose A Quest — Give your Circle a body of meaningful work. (Play and Pattern of the same name.)
  5. Enter The Game — Do the work. Track commitments. Learn from every cycle. Grow.
  6. Play — Pass The Flame — Help others form their own Circles.

The Playbook Chart — Plays × Patterns

The continuously-improving map of which Patterns compose which Plays.

This Chart is the forward facing of the Pattern–Play architecture: each Play in this Playbook listed alongside the Patterns it invokes. The reverse facing — each Pattern alongside the Plays that invoke it — lives canonically in The LIØNSBERG Pattern Language, so that each Pattern Card opens to the operational contexts it must serve.

Together the two facings make the architecture interexistent: not two separate documents but two facings of one Symphony — wisdom and arrangement, notes and riffs, seen from both directions. As Plays and Patterns mature, both facings mature with them.

Foundation — Convening Bodies

Each body-convening Play orchestrates a single operational moment — but invokes distinct Patterns for the Create-side (bringing a new body into being) and the Join-side (entering an already-living body). The Sovereign discerns which side they are on, and the Play invokes the appropriate underlying Pattern.

The Reverse Facing — Patterns And The Plays They Serve

The reverse index — each Pattern alongside the Plays that invoke it — lives in The LIØNSBERG Pattern Language, where each Pattern Card opens to the operational contexts it must serve. Maintained on the Pattern side so that Pattern authoring is informed by every Play that depends on it; maintained once, not twice.

How To Use This Chart

Authoring a new Pattern Card. Open the Reverse Facing in The LIØNSBERG Pattern Language to see every Play that invokes the Pattern you are authoring. Each Pattern Card opens to many Plays; the Pattern must hold its wisdom in a way that each Play can compose from it.

Composing a new Play. Add a new invokes block in the Plays section above. List the Patterns the Play needs. Each Pattern reference sends the player to the canonical Pattern Card for the deeper wisdom of HOW to perform that move; the Play arranges them into a riff for the operational context.

Refining a Pattern. When a Pattern's articulation deepens, all Plays that invoke it benefit automatically — because each Play references the canonical Pattern, not a duplicate.

Refining a Play. When the operational riff of a Play sharpens, the Play's composition (the Patterns it invokes) may change. The forward facing here updates; the reverse facing in the Pattern Language updates in sync.

Discovering a missing Pattern. If a Play needs a Pattern that doesn't yet exist, the gap surfaces in the Play's invocation list. The Pattern becomes the next authoring target.

Discovering a missing Play. If a common operational need has no Play, the gap surfaces in lived practice. The Play becomes the next composition target.

On The Existing Root Plays

Many of the existing root-level "Plays" in the wiki (Form A Circle, Pass The Flame, Govern Your Circles, Forge a Field of Agreements, etc.) carry substantial wisdom — they read more as canonical Pattern articulations than as operational riff compositions. As the Pattern Language + Playbook rebuild proceeds, most of these will migrate to the Patterns folder as canonical Pattern Cards, with simple Play — Title riffs in the Plays folder that invoke them.

The migration is gradual. During the transition, both old root-Plays and new Play — Title Plays will coexist; broken links will be resolved as Patterns and Plays settle.

The Disciplines That Govern The Playbook

  • No duplication. Wisdom lives in the Pattern Card. Plays reference; never restate.
  • Plays are compositions. A Play is a brief score, not a manual.
  • Maximum reuse. Frequently-invoked Patterns hold the most weight in the lived Body. Pattern Cards for high-reuse Patterns deserve the most careful articulation; when one of them deepens, every Play it serves deepens with it.
  • Continuously improving. The Chart above is a living artifact. Every Play and Pattern matures; the Chart matures with them.
  • Scale-aware. Each Pattern declares the Levels of Scale it operates at; Plays invoke Patterns at appropriate scales for the operational context.
  • Cross-cutting axes (Guilds, Tribes, Species, Voluntary Associations) inform when and how Plays apply.
  • Maps in service of Spirit. The Plays in this Playbook are tools, not idols. Spirit Precedes Pattern. When the Wise Right Thing in this moment, in this Body, in this place contradicts the Play as written — do the Wise Right Thing. The Play is the servant. The Spirit is the work.

The Playbook is a living document — growing as The Great Game unfolds.

The Pattern is articulated in The LIØNSBERG Pattern Language. The Plays compose the Patterns. The Spirit moves through both. Together — Pattern + Play + Spirit — the Body of LIØNSBERG plays the Game.
