Structure is not a cage. It is a trellis — The frame that allows the living vine to climb toward the light.
As your Circle grows in capacity and takes on more complex Quests, the question of structure will arise naturally. The answer is always the same: structure serves Purpose. If the structure does not serve the Quest, change the structure.
Not every Circle needs formal structure. Many never will. But for those whose work requires it — receiving resources, entering agreements, managing shared assets — there is a natural progression.
Tier 0 — No Formal Structure This is where every Circle begins, and where many thrive indefinitely. You are sovereign individuals choosing to gather, work, and grow together. No paperwork. No legal entity. Just a Field of Agreements and the trust between you.
This is perfectly valid. Most of the transformational work of The Great Game happens here — in kitchens, on walks, around campfires, in living rooms. Do not rush past this stage. It is not a lesser form. It is the root.
Tier 1 — Private Voluntary Association When a Circle wants to formalize its commitments without creating a legal entity, a simple written agreement among participants is sufficient. This is your Field of Agreements made explicit and signed — a declaration of shared purpose, principles, and mutual accountability.
This gives the Circle a degree of definition and seriousness without any bureaucratic overhead. It is enough for most Circles undertaking local Quests.
Tier 2 — Ecclesiastical or Membership Association Some Circles may choose to organize as a religious, spiritual, or membership association — structures that many traditions have used for millennia to protect the freedom of assembly and shared practice. These carry certain protections and recognitions without the complexity of incorporation.
Tier 3 — Fiscal Sponsorship or Donor-Advised Funds When a Circle needs to receive and manage external resources — grants, donations, community funds — it does not necessarily need its own legal entity. Fiscal sponsorship through an aligned organization, or the use of donor-advised funds, can provide the financial infrastructure without the administrative burden.
This tier is appropriate for Circles whose Quests require funding but whose energy is better spent on the work than on organizational overhead.
Tier 4 — Legal Stewardship Structures For Circles that have grown into sustained, complex endeavors — managing land, operating enterprises, stewarding significant resources — more formal structures may be needed. These include cooperatives, purpose trusts, benefit corporations, community land trusts, or decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs).
The key word is stewardship. These structures exist to steward resources and relationships in service to The Goal — not to accumulate power or wealth for their own sake.
Tier 5 — Federated Stewardship Multiple Circles sharing infrastructure, resources, and governance form federated structures. This is how the New Civilization scales — not through centralized control, but through voluntary federation of self-governing Circles, each maintaining its sovereignty while choosing to coordinate with others.
At every tier, the question is the same:
Does this structure serve our Purpose?
If yes, keep it. If no, change it. If you are unsure, start simpler. You can always add structure. Removing it is harder.
The New Civilization is not built by institutions. It is built by living Circles — and the lightest structure that allows your Circle to fulfill its Quest is the right structure.
Do not let the scaffolding become the building. The building is the life within.
Your structure serves your purpose. Now learn how free souls govern themselves — together.
The next play is Govern Your Circles.
