Field of Agreements

The shared principles, values, commitments, and norms that govern each domain — freely consented to by all sovereign members.

The Principle

The Field of Agreements is the set of shared agreements that underpin and govern each Domain of Responsibility and Authority. Operating fractally at every scale — from individual to Circle to community to bioregion to planetary — Fields of Agreement contain the fundamental agreements that unite sovereign members and provide the foundation for collective action toward a shared purpose.

The Anatomy of Every Domain

Each time sovereigns voluntarily associate, four things naturally and simultaneously emerge:

  1. A Domain of Responsibility and Authority — the living space within which the association operates
  2. A Selectively Permeable Membrane — the boundary protecting sovereignty while allowing life to flow in and out by ongoing mutual consent
  3. A Field of Agreements — the shared governance
  4. A Commons — the shared resources, nurtured by voluntary contributions

The Field of Agreements is what holds space for the domain. It is the governance structure — not imposed from above, but freely established by the sovereign members who choose to associate. It defines purpose, principles, practices, boundaries, and commitments. It governs the membrane — what enters, what leaves, and on what terms. It governs the commons — how shared resources are stewarded, contributed to, and accessed.

Without a Field of Agreements, a domain has no shared governance. With one, sovereignty is expressed through freely chosen structure rather than imposed control.

What A Field of Agreements Contains

  • Purpose: What is this domain for? (Must align fractally with The Meta Goal)
  • Principles: What values do we commit to embody?
  • Practices: How often do we meet? How do we make decisions? How do we resolve conflict?
  • Boundaries: Who is in the domain? How do new members join? How is the Selectively Permeable Membrane governed?
  • Commitments: What does each member commit to contribute?
  • Stewardship: How is the Commons resourced, managed, and governed?

Fractal Application

The same structure applies at every scale:

  • Individual: Personal agreements with self and ONE — the foundation of all governance
  • Circle: The Circle's shared agreements governing purpose, rhythm, decision-making, and mutual accountability
  • Community: Agreements between federated Circles governing shared resources, coordination, and collective action
  • Bioregion: Agreements between federated communities governing food systems, education, healthcare, and ecological stewardship
  • Planetary: The agreements governing the Lionsberg Commons — the highest-level field in service of ONE and All

At every level, the agreements are freely consented to by the sovereign members of that domain. At every level, members are free to leave. At every level, the agreements can be consciously evaluated and continuously improved.
