Species

A Body of sovereigns federated by shared biological-ontological kind. The cross-cutting axis of being-of-a-kind: humans, dolphins, redwoods, ravens, octopuses; and across the cosmos, the wider community of conscious species. Spans scales and spatiotemporal expanses freely.

A Species is a Body of sovereigns who share the deep ontological kinship of being one kind of being. Humans are a species. So are dolphins, redwoods, ravens, mycorrhizal fungi, octopuses, honeybees, and the countless other forms of life on Earth. Beyond Earth, the wider cosmos holds many other species — conscious beings of forms and lineages we are only beginning to know.

The Species axis is one of the four cross-cutting axes that federate sovereigns across the nested place-and-superorganism scales:

  • Guilds federate by function — sovereigns who share a craft
  • Tribes federate by lineage — sovereigns who share a cultural-kinship inheritance
  • Species federate by biological-ontological kind — sovereigns who share a way of being
  • Voluntary Associations federate by chosen affinity — sovereigns who gather around a chosen purpose

Spans Scales And Spatiotemporal Expanses

Like the other cross-cutting axes, Species is not bound by the scale-hierarchy:

  • A Species can have billions of individuals (humans, ants) or a few hundred (critically endangered species)
  • A Species can be distributed across the entire planet (humans, rats, dandelions) or confined to a single Watershed (many endemic species)
  • A Species persists across deep evolutionary time — millennia, millions, even hundreds of millions of years — long beyond any single Body of place or Voluntary Association
  • A Species exists at every Level of Scale simultaneously — there are individual humans, human Circles, human Villages, human Communities... and the same nesting holds for any species that organizes across scale

Inter-Species Relationship As Foundational

The recognition of other species as sovereign bodies with their own inner life, their own knowing, their own forms of consciousness — not as resources, not as objects, not as lesser beings — is foundational to the LIØNSBERG body's right relationship with the living world.

Stewardship of any Bioregion requires honoring the Species that dwell there. The Living Systems Member Constituency in federated ecosystems is precisely the structural recognition that other Species have standing — not metaphorically, but actually, in the governance of the Body.

Across The Cosmos

Per The Story of LIØNSBERG and the wider Chronicles, conscious species span the cosmic expanses. Earth is one biome holding many species. Other planets, other star systems, other galaxies hold their own. The cosmic federation of conscious species — the Federation of Worlds, the Cycle of Cosmic Co-Creation — is the largest-scale articulation of Species as a federated Body.

Earth's awakening to the wider cosmic community of Species is one of the works named in the cosmic-local threshold of the Levels of Scale.

What The Species Holds

  • The deep being of a kind — what it is to be human, dolphin, redwood, fungus
  • Inter-individual transmission that no individual carries alone — genetic, cultural, behavioral inheritance of the kind
  • Ecological role — the niche, function, and reciprocity of this species with the wider Body
  • Lineage across evolutionary time — millions of years of becoming
  • Sovereignty as a kind — Species have rights and standing not reducible to individual members

Distinguished From

  • Tribes — sub-species lineages of humans (or potentially other social species); a Tribe is within a Species
  • Guilds — function-federation typically within humans for the LIØNSBERG work, though analogues exist in other species
  • Voluntary Association — chosen affinity, typically within humans, though inter-species cooperation can be a Voluntary Association
  • Biological taxon — Species is more than the formal taxonomic category; it is the Body of conscious-kind, honored as sovereign
