Neighborhood

A cluster of Circles, families, and immediately-adjacent sovereigns. Roughly 15 to 40 souls. The natural sub-scale within both Villages and Communities — the people whose porches you can see from your own.

A Neighborhood is the scale just above the Circle (3 to 13) and just below the Village (50 to 150). It is the cluster of 2-5 Circles, the extended kin-group, the few-blocks-around-you, the cluster of households who share the same well or the same path through the meadow.

A Neighborhood is functional within both Villages and Communities:

  • Within a Village of 50-150, a Neighborhood is one of the 3-5 natural sub-clusters by which the Village self-organizes
  • Within a Community of ~10,000, a Neighborhood is the smallest cell of physical proximity — the few households around your own, the immediate block, the shared courtyard

At every settlement form — urban, suburban, rural, intentional, indigenous — the Neighborhood scale appears as the natural unit of immediate physical neighborliness.

What The Neighborhood Holds

At ~15-40 people, the Neighborhood is the scale at which:

  • Mutual aid is immediate. When a child needs watching, a meal needs delivering, a fence needs mending — the Neighborhood is who shows up, often without being asked.
  • Direct local stewardship happens. The shared alley, the corner garden, the small park, the unofficial gathering spot — the Neighborhood holds them.
  • Emergency response is fastest. In any local trouble, the Neighborhood is the first responders.
  • Children grow up known. Each Neighborhood child has 15-40 adults who know their name, watch out for them, and contribute to their formation.
  • Sovereign-to-sovereign accountability still works at human range — close enough to see each other's eyes, far enough that not every interaction must be ceremonial.

Between Circle and Village, the Neighborhood is a natural cluster but not always a formal federation tier. Within larger Communities (10,000), the Neighborhood becomes more structurally important — the way a Community of 10,000 actually breaks down into 250-500 Neighborhoods of immediate physical proximity, each holding several Circles.

Whether the Neighborhood becomes a formal Council-bearing tier depends on the local form. In a tight Village of 100, the Village itself may meet directly without distinct Neighborhood structure. In a large City Community, Neighborhood Councils typically emerge naturally.

Distinguished From

  • Circle (3-13) — intentional, gathered for shared purpose; can include sovereigns who don't live nearby. The Neighborhood is geographic; the Circle is purposive.
  • Village (50-150) — at full Village scale, direct knowing of everyone still works. The Neighborhood is a sub-unit within the Village.
  • Household — a single family or shared dwelling, typically smaller. A Neighborhood holds many Households.
